I commented on a diary a couple of days ago from a woman who said her son was serving in Iraq and needed a kit to armor his Humvee. She had lots of comments supporting and sympathizing with her.
The last comment at the time I read the diary said something like he should get the hell out. I replied to that poster in support. I said something like I sympathized with her plight but that this is a volunteer army and someone should have talked him out of enlisting. I can't remember the exact wording. That is not so important. I was respectful of her, but wanted to also make the point that people who enlist this far into this illegal, immoral action should be disillusioned of any false sense of serving their country. They are not serving their country; they are perpetuating an illegal action that has no moral high ground. I assured her that I hoped her son would get the protection he needed.
This, however, was not enough for the Kos community as someone removed my comments. What does this say about the standing of this blog as a vehicle for political debate?
I did not insult anyone, I did not use foul language. I merely attempted to bring the political viewpoint into this diary. The reaction seems to be along the lines of something Anne Coulter once said "Anyone who disagrees with the president is a traitor"
This version seems to be "anyone who dares engage a worried mother in debate is a traitor to the Kos community"
Come on people, this is supposed to be a place where we discuss, not just blindly sympathize because someone's child is in a war zone.
A point I made to her was that I wish she had done some screaming when her son was talking about enlisting. If she is a member of this community, I assume she has been aware of the heinous and unpatriotic nature of this war, and could have been an influence to dissuade him from joining in the first place.
So, what do you all think? Debate or lovefest?
