Well I have been reading DK today with all the reaction to the speech, the laudatory comments on the stunning rhetoric and the outrage over the idiot congressman who shouted out the ‘Liar’ comment. A whole lot of outrage has been focused on making Wilson resign or censuring him. A lot of sound and fury over something pretty trivial in the scope of issues we need to pay attention to.

I am one of the lucky ones; I am employed and I have health insurance. I am also committed to our country changing this system that (sorry Mr. President) does not work. We need to be vigilant to assure that these legislators don't turn out something too embarrassingly shoddy.

Well, Bush is not content to go quietly into the great good night and try to attain a genteel stature of a former president.

He's set up an 'alumni' website where he can continue to spew his political filth. To what end? It would seem that it's just for the sake of sowing yet more partisanship.

I've been holding my breath for nearly a month now; hoping, worrying, clenching my teeth, tossing through sleepless nights.

We have suffered through the worst of the nefarious, dirty tactics from the opposition. It was a representation of all that has been bad, all that has been reprehensible about the political climate in the United States of America. I watched with horror election after election as these tactics of fear, hate and manipulation worked. I considered more than once the possibility of residing outside my country. But I didn't want to.

I commented on a diary a couple of days ago from a woman who said her son was serving in Iraq and needed a kit to armor his Humvee. She had lots of comments supporting and sympathizing with her.

The last comment at the time I read the diary said something like he should get the hell out. I replied to that poster in support. I said something like I sympathized with her plight but that this is a volunteer army and someone should have talked him out of enlisting. I can't remember the exact wording. That is not so important. I was respectful of her, but wanted to also make the point that people who enlist this far into this illegal, immoral action should be disillusioned of any false sense of serving their country. They are not serving their country; they are perpetuating an illegal action that has no moral high ground. I assured her that I hoped her son would get the protection he needed.

I just left the Eric Massa chat blog and have to say how invigorating it is to have frank and open access to a candidate and his stance on a variety of issues.

I am also struck by how clear and fearless our non-career candidates have been. Contrast this with the mumble, mumble stance we get from so many career-ists. Thank you, Eric. I wish I was living in the 29th so I could vote for you. Instead I will send money to promote your candidacy. I wish you the best and know you will bring fresh and clear thinking to a congress mired in a directionless morass. Read More

I am in Brasil this week and had an interesting conversation with one of my hosts last night.

I discovered that voting is mandatory in Brasil. If you don't vote, you can't get or renew a passport, you can't get a job. Maybe more. You can submit a justification, but if you blow it off, the consequences are strong.

Also, Brasil does not work on voting day. How civilized is that?

The United States should take a look at this system. It seems to me that much of the mess we are in at the present moment was brought about by apathy on the part of the voting public.

The percentage of voters doing their duty in any given election is 90-95%.

I just read a diary on decency and am moved to spout off again.

Just when and who decided that sex is indecent? Everybody does it. The birds and the bees do it, the dogs do it. I am sure that many of your children have seen the dogs going after one another. We're supposed to do it. It's what we are designed to do. If some people choose to do it or watch it for pleasure rather than just for making more people, then what the hell is wrong with that? I have been a reader of kos for a few months now but only just started to post. I enjoy the political analysis and the exposure to so many facts. Certainly better news than the "news". This kind of analysis is not my strong point. I am more of a people person, concerned with living in a world in which people are treated fairly and generously.

I have also never been politically active. While I have strong feelings about the state and stance of politics, I have always left it up to others to drive my points home for me. I am mostly a loner in that way. That is, until about the middle of GWBs first term. The alarm bells began to ring and have only grown louder with each bit of news from that evil nexus. I thought that people would easily see through this buffoon and politics would find its' muddled center again. Instead, the insanity gained steam, and to my horror I am confronted with another four years of dangerous politics. What is happening now could undo, for my lifetime, the compassionate gains of the last forty years.
